Effects of paludiculture products on reducing greenhouse gas emissions from agricultural peatlands

چکیده

Drained peatlands are a large emission source and shift to paludiculture (rewetting cultivation of wet-tolerant plants) is emerging as potential reduction measure. Paludiculture can potentially results in savings from direct emissions, product substitution carbon storage, but the whole life cycle climate impacts rarely studied. In this study, we evaluated two systems (cattail ( Typha ) construction board common reed Phragmites horticultural vermicompost) with cradle-to-grave assessment (LCA) applied global sensitivity analysis identify, which parts system would need more research development ensure net savings. Based on results, both result much lower emissions than current agricultural land use may be greenhouse gas sinks (average ? 6.0 tCO 2 eq ha ?1 for cattail board; ?3.0 growing media). The uncertainty concentrated few key processes: CO CH 4 paludiculture, additives, vermicomposting reed. Further these minimize help maximizing mitigation derived products. • reduces peatlands. products store substitute intensive Benefits increased by identifying high process stages production. Opportunities for reducing greenhouse gas emissions in tropical peatlands.

The upcoming global mechanism for reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation in developing countries should include and prioritize tropical peatlands. Forested tropical peatlands in Southeast Asia are rapidly being converted into production systems by introducing perennial crops for lucrative agribusiness, such as oil-palm and pulpwood plantations, causing large greenhouse gas...

Reducing Australia’s Greenhouse Gas Emissions

Interim targets to reduce greenhouse gas emissions are essential to put Australia on track toward the deep emissions cuts required by 2050. This report fi nds that by 2020, emission reductions of greater than 30 per cent below 1990 levels are possible, but only with a wide range of concerted actions in the energy, industry and land-use sectors. If the contributions from energy effi ciency in th...

On strategies for reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

Equity is of fundamental concern in the quest for international cooperation to stabilize greenhouse gas concentrations by the reduction of emissions. By modeling the carbon cycle, we estimate the global CO(2) emissions that would be required to stabilize the atmospheric concentration of CO(2) at levels ranging from 450 to 1,000 ppm. These are compared, on both an absolute and a per-capita basis...

The Costs of Reducing Greenhouse-Gas Emissions

Human activities around the world are producing increasingly large quantities of greenhouse gases, particularly carbon dioxide (CO2) resulting from the consumption of fossil fuels and deforestation. Most experts expect that the accumulation of such gases in the atmosphere will result in a variety of environmental changes over time, including a gradual warming of the global climate, extensive ch...
